Dr John-Paul McCarthy completed his doctorate on W.E. Gladstone's intellectual life at the University of Oxford, where he held the Usher-Cunningham Scholarship in Modern History. Prior to his doctoral studies, he was a Senator George J. Mitchell Scholar in the United States. After a stint at the Home Office considering applications for permission to bring judicial review proceedings against the Home Secretary in immigration matters, he was called to the Bar of England and Wales from Middle Temple in 2019. He currently practices as a barrister in the Family Court, and in the Family Division of the High Court of England and Wales. A fluent Irish-speaker, he has written extensively about Irish history and politics for Tuairisc, the leading Irish-language magazine for culture and ideas.
