in Austria at the time, to Head Chef, lecturer at a catering college and ultimately chef-patron of his
own chambres d'hôtes in rural France. He writes about his love of good food, with anecdotes of his
working conditions and of colleagues, friends and guests he encountered in his career.
He recounts the trials and tribulations of moving to France with his second wife Elizabeth, setting
up their chambres d'hôtes on a shoestring and how between them, with his cooking and Elizabeth's
front-of-house skills, won over their guests and spent twenty happy years in the beautiful Dordogne
countryside.
Recipes of some favourite dishes and regional specialities of his native Austria as well as some
French traditional dishes, are also included.
Konrad, born in war-torn Austria next to a goldmine in a remote mountain valley, describes how at fourteen he began training as a professional chef and on qualifying took up a post in Guernsey in the Channel Islands where he soon rose to the position of Head Chef at a leading hotel in the island. He then moved to new Zealand to work in the Tourist Hotel Corporation's flagship hotel in Waitangi as head-chef before going to the South Island to work for an eccentric American in a hunting - fishing lodge, way out in the bush. Family reasons eventually took him back to Guernsey where he soon re-established himself, working in leading hotels and restaurants, eventually becoming involved in the training and education of young people interested in pursuing a catering career. After meeting his second wife Elizabeth, they moved to rural France where they established a successful boutique chambres d'hôtes. He has two daughters and two grand-daughters and is now enjoying his retirement in Herefordshire. He still takes pleasure in sharing good food and wine with friends and family whilst indulging in his love of jazz and classical music. He enjoys walking, preferably in his beloved Austrian mountains.
