Drawing on the author's experience as a paddler and as the leader of an environmental nonprofit working to protect the Willamette River, this book illustrates what it is like to travel the Willamette River Greenway. It also provides an account of how the State of Oregon and other entities fail to protect the river's water quality and habitat.
Drawing on the author's experience as a paddler and as the leader of an environmental nonprofit working to protect and restore the Willamette River, this book illustrates what it is like to travel the Willamette River Greenway. It also provides a first hand account of how the State of Oregon and other entities fail to protect the river's water quality and habitat. The "greenway" is a lens through which to view both policy and practice in relation to the river's health.

Travis Williams grew up in Milwaukie, Oregon, and loved to be outside early on. Over the last 21 years he has led the environmental nonprofit Willamette Riverkeeper. He and his wife and daughters spend a good amount of time canoe camping in Oregon and beyond. He holds an MS. in Environmental Science from Johns Hopkins University, and a BA in International Studies from Portland State University. In 2019 the Spirit Mountain Community Fund recognized his work with the Helping Hand Award, and in 2004 was a recipient of the annual Skidmore Prize for his river protection advocacy.
