In this inspiring, sincere and often intense memoir, Lei Diansheng recounts the decade he spent circumnavigating China. He followed his dream across deserts and over mountains, surviving storms, starvation, wild animals and robbery. A deeply human telling of the ecstatic highs and dismal lows of a near-impossible journey across stark frontiers.
LEI DIANSHENG won his place in history by committing ten years to circumnavigating the highways, deserts and plateaus of his homeland. Along the way he would stare death in the face, battling storms, starvation, wild animals, and all too often, his fellow man.

Lei’s journey brought him to the graves of his heroes, to China’s starkest frontiers and to a new understanding of what it means to be alive. In his memoir, The Will to Walk, Lei recounts the greatest heights and fiercest challenges of ten years spent off the beaten path, pursuing a dream further than anyone could have thought possible.

Lei Diansheng was born in 1963 in the far-northeastern city of Harbin. He endured a traumatic childhood due to the Cultural Revolution, losing both his mother and father during his early teens. His ten-year hike across China was inspired by a 1987 set of postage stamps commemorating the 17th-century traveller Xu Xiake. During the course of his 81,000 kilometres journey, he took more than 40,000 photographs, kept a travel journal of over one million words and rose to fame throughout China. In 2004, he entered the Guinness World Records, and in 2008 he helped to carry the torch for the Beijing Olympics.
