For the keen fly fisher, artificial flies and how to tie them are a sheer inexhaustible topic. This book summarises the knowledge regarding natural insect models and how the flies mimic them, together with tying techniques and presentation tactics. The authors have compiled an easily understood life history of all the important insect groups that are associated with fly-fishing practice, and illustrated them with many colour photos. Fly fishers can then make good use of this knowledge when they’re out in the wild.
The adult and larval stages of the following insect groups are discussed in detail:
Mayflies – Ephemeroptera
Caddis flies – Trichoptera
Stoneflies – Plecoptera
Other insect groups (dragonflies, grasshoppers, cicadas, bugs,
beetles, drone and alder flies, neuropterans, hymenopterans and dipterans)
Typical representatives of all the groups are presented in nature photographs, while traditional and new flies are discussed, and illustrated tying techniques with variants are provided.
The third edition has been revised and expanded, and in terms of tying techniques, too, brought up to date. More than 150 typical fly designs are discussed.
