In 1971 Nicholas Humphrey, a theoretical psychologist, spent three weeks at Dian Fossey's gorilla research centre in Rwanda. It was there amongst the mountain gorillas that he began to focus on the philosophical and scientific puzzle that has fascinated him ever since - the problem of how a man or animal can know what it is like to be itself. This book describes where his original speculations led. The author is also a writer and documentary film-maker who won the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize in 1986.
