Bonsai, the practice of growing miniaturized trees in shallow containers, can transform even the tiniest outdoor space into a beautiful landscape, or create points of interest both indoors and out. The selection of plants that can be developed into bonsai ranges from conifers, maples and bamboos to leafy and flowering trees and shrubs, and hardy indigenous species that are adapted to local conditions. With its wealth of sound advice and helpful tips, this book will guide novices through their first steps, as well as offer new ideas and insight to experienced practitioners of this captivating botanical art.

David Squire has a lifetime's experience with plants, both cultivated and native types. Throughout his gardening and journalistic careers, David has written more than 80 books on plants and gardening, including 14 books in the Specialist Guide series. He also has a wide interest in the uses of native plants, whether for eating and survival, or for their historical roles in medicine, folklore and customs. Allan Haschick holds a national diploma in Horticulture from Technikon Natal (now Durban University of Technology). He was assistant manager at Floradale Nursery and Garden Centre in Port Elizabeth for many years, before starting his own landscaping consultancy. Allan started writing for SA Garden in 1999 and, from 2002, joined the magazine’s panel of experts who provide advice to readers. His first book, Coastal Gardening in South Africa, was published by Struik Lifestyle in 2014. He has written columns for the Eastern Cape Herald and Algoa Sun newspapers, contributed articles to the ‘Life is a Garden’ initiative of the SA Nurseryman’s Association, and adapted several UK-published gardening books for South African conditions. In addition, he gives talks and lectures to garden clubs and groups throughout the Eastern Cape.
