Growing up in the West Midlands, Carlton Palmer became an elite professional footballer, first with West Bromwich Albion and then with Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Coventry City - picking up 18 England Caps and plaudits for his determined, physical style of play along the way. But his story is more than that. His autobiography is not just about football but is an intimate portrait of the man himself, told with honesty, wit and plain-speaking intelligence. From his early boyhood years Carlton has always had to fight for success, and this intuitive, single-minded determination is apparent in all aspects of his life, the personal as well as the professional. This is a narrative in which football and life intersect in revealing and fascinating ways - a portrait of a man who also happens to be a footballer.

Carlton Palmer began his football career as an apprentice at his local club West Bromwich Albion while still a teenager and quickly made a name for himself as a combative midfielder. He established a rapport with The Baggies' manager Ron Atkinson who persuaded Carlton to follow him when he took the reins at Sheffield Wednesday. Carlton's determined, battling style endeared him to the Hillsborough faithful, and to then England manager Graham Taylor who selected him to represent his country on 18 occasions. Making over 200 appearances for Wednesday, Carlton was transferred to Leeds United in 1994 for a fee of GBP2.6 million. Three years later he moved to Southampton for two seasons before joining Nottingham Forest and then Coventry City. Since retiring from playing, Carlton has worked as a football coach and TV pundit. He is now based in China where he is the academy director at Wellington College International in Shanghai.
