Chapter 1
The Beginning of My Journey
My journey actually begins with my back story. I would like to share with you some of the things and events that led up to my getting this disease. I have always been a very active person, and when I was younger I enjoyed horseback riding, playing tennis, and going for long walks. As time went by I also became interested in ballroom dancing and competed in many ballroom dance competitions over the years. I also won a few of them along the way. I continued playing tennis and I began to teach my husband the game. I must admit over the years he became a good player. The long walks continued to be a pastime that I truly enjoyed. Sometimes my husband would join me and we would just walk holding hands and talk. Sometimes I would walk by myself and I would just enjoy nature with all of the beautiful trees and flowers everywhere.
I can distinctly remember that it was on Saturday, and it was a beautiful spring morning when I went for one of my long walks. After a long, rather harsh winter I was so happy that spring was here. This was the first day where the weather was really nice. It was about 68 degrees outside and after a long cold winter this type of weather felt like a heat wave. Many people were out and about in shorts. Many of the flowers had bloomed and I felt that it was just a perfect day. I had a smile on my face, a spring in my step and I felt great. In fact, I felt so good, that I began to walk at a nice brisk pace. Not speed walking but at a good brisk pace.
Suddenly, as I was walking around a curve in the road I tripped on a part of the sidewalk that was elevated approximately an inch and half. The fact that I was walking very rapidly, and I was walking on a downward slope in the path, both of my feet flew from under me when I tripped. As I began to fall towards the ground I realized that I was falling face first, and I instinctively put my hands out in front of me in order to catch myself and to try and brace myself from the fall. The impact of the fall was devastating. Since I had been walking on a downward slope and walking at a very fast pace, this along with the angle of my fall, and the speed of my fall, caused me to break both of my wrists when I hit the ground. I would soon find out that not only did I break both wrists, I had received multiple fractures in both wrists. The pain from the fall was excruciating and I believe that I passed out for a moment when I hit the ground. When I awoke I felt very woozy. I sat up very slowly, then the pain jolted me wide awake. The pain was excruciating, I had never felt pain like this before.
As I began to try and stand up I felt very dizzy and I had to get up without the use of my hands. It was quite an ordeal. I had also hit my chin and my forehead when I fell. I began to cry. Then I began to sob. I was slowly able to get to my feet however, I was still very disoriented. I knew that I was still a long distance from my house and by now the pain was almost unbearable. I then said to myself if I can reach my cell phone, which is in my pocket, I could call my husband and he will come and pick me up. Just thinking that help would be here soon made me somehow feel better. The pain was still there but knowing my husband would soon be here was somehow comforting to me. As much as it hurt I reached into my pocket to get my cell phone. It was not there. I then said to myself ok my cell phone has to be in my other pocket. I reached into my other pocket and much to my horror it was not there either. Just reaching into my pockets caused the pain to sky rocket. It felt so bad that I wanted to scream. Then sheer panic griped me. I began to look for my cell phone on the ground, I looked all over the sidewalk and I looked in the grass and in the flowers. I could not find it anywhere. Now I was in a real panic.
Then suddenly I realized that this was one of the few times that I did not have my cell phone with me. As this thought went racing through my mind I knew that I would have to walk all of the way back to my house. By now the pain was excruciating, and it seemed like it was getting worse with every step that I took. I felt like the vibration from walking was making the pain worse. The pain seemed so bad I felt like I was going to pass out. I told myself that I had to keep moving I had to stay conscious. I kept saying to myself just one step at a time, one step at a time and soon I would be home again. Please God help me, just one step at a time.
When I got home I could not take the keys out of my pocket in order to open the door. I tried to ring the doorbell however, I was in too much pain. I had not only broken both my wrists, I also fell on my chin and hit my forehead in the fall. The pain felt like it was everywhere in my body. I didn’t know what to do so I began to kick on the door and call for my husband. As I was kicking on the door I thought oh God please don’t let me break my toes. Then I heard my husband running down the stairs in the foyer. When he opened the front door he looked at me in shock. He had been in his office working on his computer. As soon as he heard me kicking on the door and calling for him he bolted out of his office and down the foyer stairs and opened the door. When he saw me he looked at me in astonishment and said what happened? I told him that I had fallen and I thought that I had broken both of my wrists. He then said we have to get you to a hospital right away. We need to get you to the emergency room now! He was still in shock as we drove to the hospital.
As we drove in the car to the hospital I explained to my husband how the fall had happened. He just sat in silence and listened. On the way to the hospital I said to my husband how thankful I was that we lived close to a major hospital. The hospital was only about a mile away however, when you are in excruciating pain every block that we drove seemed like an eternity.
When we arrived at the hospital emergency room I thought I was going to pass out again from the pain. It was not long after we got to the hospital that I saw the first doctor. He asked me how I felt and I explained to him I felt like I had to continue to fight to keep from passing out. By this time the pain was almost becoming more than I could handle. After the first doctor examined me he said he wanted to bring in a specialist to look at my wrists. He also mentioned to me that I also had a bad bruise on my chin and a larger abrasion on my forehead. He also told me that there was a very large bruise and abrasion on my right knee.
Soon afterward the specialists arrived I was given morphine for the pain. He then asked the technician to take x-rays of both of my wrists. The technician covered me with a lead shield apron and he took multiple x-rays of both of my wrists. When the doctor came back he looked at the x-rays and he said in a matter of fact way that I had multiple bone fractures in both wrists. He said that the x-rays showed that I had three breaks in one wrist and two in the other wrist.
A total of five simultaneous bone fractures had occurred with my fall. I just looked at him and began to cry. I looked at my husband and he looked very shocked at what the doctor was telling us. He then set my bones and began putting the temporary cast on both wrists. The doctor gave me some pain medication immediately along with a prescription for some pain medication. He then said that he wanted to see me again on Monday at his office. All I could do for the remainder of the weekend was to sleep. Thank God for sleep.
When Monday came I had to call my office and let them know what had happened. I explained to them that I had broken both wrists in a fall and that I had a total of five bone fractures. I explained to them that I would need to be off work for 9 weeks while my wrists healed. They were all shocked when I told them. They wished me well and said that they hoped that I had a speedy recovery. At this point in time there was almost nothing that I could do for myself. My husband had to help me take a shower. He had to comb my hair, he had to feed me, and he had to help me get dressed. I felt so helpless. However, I was very blessed to have a husband that would love me and take care of me in this manner.
I arrived at the doctor’s office the next day and I felt a little tired even though I had slept for nine hours. I had also taken one of the pain pills that the doctor had prescribed for me. I am not someone that likes to take pain medication and I try to take it only when the pain is really intense. I had asked my mother in law to drive me to the doctor’s office since my husband had to go to work. Even though she lived over forty minutes away from where I lived she agreed to drive me without any second thoughts. She was a real blessing for me and a real help. After a short while they called me into the examination room. The doctor came into the room and looked at my wrists and he said that he wanted to have his x-ray technician take more x-rays of my wrists. He said he needed four x-rays on each wrist. He said he would come back to see me once the x-rays were completed. When the x-rays were taken I noticed that the x-ray technician did not put the x-ray shielding apron on me.
After the x-ray secession was done I asked the technician why she did not put the lead shield x-ray blanket on me when she took the x-rays. She said that it was not necessary for the few x-rays that I was getting. I thought to myself what is she talking about “not necessary.”
I kept thinking that this seems a little strange since the technician had put...
