Lichen identification is a challenging activity requiring an accurate understanding of lichen anatomy and biology and the associated terminology. Once mastered, a world of Lilliputian biodiversity opens up. This was the first book written specifically on Ireland's lichens and is now expanded to include over 50 additional species.
Ireland's rich lichen biodiversity is illuminated by this comprehensive guide, now updated to include over 50 new species, including Ireland's four Bryoria species. There is also a new section on lichen microscopy methods, a topic few introductory texts cover. The species descriptions emphasise essential features, substrate, habitat type and distribution maps, and are illustrated with accurate line drawings.
Other topics include Ireland's lichen ecology, lichen anatomy, spot tests, achieving better contrast and resolution with your microscope, sectioning lichens, using stains to enhance visualisation of structures, and many other identification tricks and techniques.

Paul Whelan, a graduate of both UCD and TCD, taught biology and mathematics before he turned to Computer Aided Design, publishing twelve books on the subject. He founded Nature's Calendar Ireland to gather phenology data and currently runs Biology.ie to collect road-kill data and promote biodiversity awareness. He is highly regarded in lichen circles, with London's Kew Gardens taking his micrographs.
