When Louis XIV decided to send some 80 horses to New France between 1665 and 1671, little did he know that he was launching a new indigenous race. Those first horses would adapt to their new environment in North America, multiply and develop in virtual isolation for almost a century. From their offspring originated the Canadien horse, one of the most versatile races in equestrian history.

Pearl Duval holds a degree in History of Art History from the Universite de Montreal. She is an equestrian journalist with the magazine Equi-Libre published by the organization Quebec a cheval and works for the City of Montreal Public Library Network. Claude Richer is an agronomist and researcher with 25 years' experience with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Casey Roberts is a literary translator who won the John Glassco Prize awarded by the Canadian Literary Translators Association for his translation of the YA novel Break Away, Jessie on My Mind.
