verything we experience in this life has a starting point. My goal in this chapter is to get you to imagine where you want to be, but not before looking at where you are at first. I don’t want you to spend a lifetime trying to figure out a way to get to your destination—unlike my own experience.
As an educator, I like to give visuals, even if in an explanation format. This way you’re creatively thinking. We often hear “it’s not the destination that matters as much as taking in the journey.” Well, I want you, through this chapter, to explore and think outside the box. I want you to discard all limitations and restrictions you may have built up regarding your dreams. I want you to be intrigued about a new opportunity or get the facts about the ones you may be most interested in.
You might be asking yourself, how do I actually get started in the beauty industry?
Great question!
First, I want you to ask yourself what it is that you really want to achieve in this industry. Naturally, most people think if they want to do hair, then they have to have a license to do so. I would ask you that same question but slightly different. Do you really want to physically do hair? Or do you like the hair and beauty industry and would be open to all aspects of it? There is more to the hair and beauty industry than physically doing someone’s hair. Open your mind to all the possibilities that exist. It will help you.
This is crucially important. I bring this point up simply because, since my inception working as an educator with REDKEN, I have found that so many stylists have revealed to me that it wasn’t so much they wanted to do hair as it was that they wanted to work in the industry. But they really didn’t know how else to get into it without having to go to school.
Please, pay close attention to this chapter. This is the starting point of saving you time and potentially a lot of money! This is the chapter that starts to guide you with laser focus direction. This chapter will clarify a lot of the confusion and uncertainty you may have had over time. Do not be surprised if you find yourself letting out a huge sigh of relief. While I can’t cover every position and every job title, I can offer some substance to many job opportunities and income potentials that exist in this industry overall. This can serve as an introduction. I would like you to research further on some of my suggestions. This will really help you. It does not pay to be unaware. That is how you are overtaken and even taken advantage of.
It is sad to say that many cosmetologists have no idea that these positions exist, and if they do, they have no idea how to go about applying or setting themselves up for success so that they can achieve their goals. Some positions don’t even require a license or industry experience, yet many go to school with the assumption that they need to start there.
It never hurts to have your license, that’s for sure. But your start in this industry really could be sooner rather than later. You may find that you have been hindering more than helping yourself. Don’t feel bad. You should become excited; this is the reviving of your dreams. This is the new start. This is the new path in the journey.
The challenge I had when I started was being told I could do many things in the industry once licensed, and after venturing down that path, I was given no direction or road map to succeed. This still holds very true today when I speak to seasoned and novice stylists as an educator. The internet has changed some of this, but the industry as I see it through the eyes of an educator really lacks the genuineness required to help young and old aspiring artists in the beauty industry find a true successful career path.
But I also say to proceed with caution, because should you choose a career path in this industry that doesn’t require you to have your cosmetology license today, it could very well mean that by the time you read this book or decide to venture into this industry that could have all changed. This industry overall is becoming more and more regulated, not only by the State Boards but even by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) who regulates how our products are being sold, marketed, and advertised through the beauty industry and mass media outlets. This goes for non-licensed beauty bloggers as well, who in fact are driving today’s beauty industry into exponential growth. Make sure getting your license is at the top of your list. If you do not do it now, make sure that you do it as soon as possible. The last thing you want is to have all your hard work come to an abrupt end because of something that could have been sorted out long before.
For now, not all fields in the beauty industry require licenses. Remember, I explained to you that this book is a tool. Therefore, at the time it was written the content was up to date. Regardless the format you are reading this book in, you will find all your tools on our website at
www.shadesofmonet.com visit the ‘Shear Destiny Book’ tab and then go to ‘Resource Center’ where you can download any materials you need to help you succeed throughout this book. Before we start mapping out your career destination, I’m going to assume you are a visual learner. I’m not stereotyping you at all. It’s just a fact that most beauty industry enthusiasts are visual learners. So let’s put this next analogy into a more visual context. This way we can stretch your vision beyond the text your reading at this moment, and we can do a small activity together.
Look at this map of the United States. You will need to download the actual printable version on our website to complete this next activity.
If you look closely at this map, the states are labeled each with a career path in the industry.
I have provided you with a PDF in our resource center of all the states and links that take you directly to each State Boards website. This way, you can call them to ask whether or not that career path requires a license. Each state is different.
If you are in search of a school, here are some things to ask the administration before committing:
1.Does the school offer financial aid (if needed)?
2.Do they offer any kind of business building program in their curriculum?
3.Do they help with job placement? If so, what exactly do they do, and how do they go about it?
4.Are they brand specific (meaning do they teach using one brand for their color line, which makes it easier to help you become acclimated with hair color)?
5.Do they have brand educators come in and teach?
6.Do salons from the local area come in and speak?
7.Do they help you put your resume together so that you are prepared to look for work?
I have also provided a sample resume for you, just in case your school has not. As I already expressed to you in Chapter 1, I’m here for you, and I have that covered! Again, visit the online resource center where you will find a sample “Stylists Resume” to help you get started.
While we are in planning mode, go to my website
www.shadesofmonet.com and print out the map right now before we go any further.
Now that we are taking this journey together, tape your map onto a wall. Place it in an area in your house that you frequent most throughout the day. If you have an office, put it where you will see this map every time you sit at your desk. Maybe you only have a one bedroom apartment. No, worries! Stick it in a place where it’s the first thing you’ll see when you walk in and the last thing you’ll see when you walk out. This will keep you motivated. The more you see your goals and dreams mapped out, the more motivation is stirred up within you. When your motivation is stirred up, that is when you are moved to act. That’s what we want – action.
Perfect!
Now, grab a few red stick pins, one green stick pin, and a few pieces of strings. Black thread will do.
Now, let’s imagine us—yes, you and I—going on a trip together! This is going to be so much fun! I can just see it. However, you get to choose the destination this time! You could fly nonstop to any state in the United States of your choice, or if you’d like you can choose a connecting flight. Pick the place you want to end up in. Do not let your mind talk you out of it. I need you to believe that anything is possible. That is what I did. It works. Trust me.
What place or places do your natural instincts tell you to pick when creating this travel itinerary?
Would you like to fly first class or coach?
Nonstop or connecting?
Of course, we want first class, nonstop! We are aiming for the best here!
Perfect!
That’s what it is then, first class, nonstop!
Now let’s look at this map on your wall and place your green pin in the state you are in today. For example: I live in Georgia, at the time of writing this book, so my one and only green pin would be pinned right in good ol’ Georgia. Remember, we need a starting point. This is actually the “Go” or “Starting” point of your career path. My starting point was in 1994 in Granada Hills, California, where I moved to get away from the...
