CHAPTER 1

Does the Government Really

Want to Cure Cancer?

Sure there are dishonest men in local government. But there are dishonest men in national government too.

~ Richard M. Nixon

Corruption and hypocrisy ought not to be inevitable products of democracy, as they undoubtedly are today.

~ Mahatma Gandhi

It’s appalling that our country’s medical establishment expends so much time, money, and effort convincing the American public of its sincere desire to prevent and cure cancer when it actually has no such intention. You will see in the following examples the contradiction that exists between what is said and what is done by the government when it comes to cancer research and treatment. As the saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words,” and although there is much lip service, there is very little action behind it.

You may ask yourself, what does the government have to do with the cancer industry? The answer is everything. The reason for this is that the powers that be, namely the American Medical Association, the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, the Food and Drug Administration, and the pharmaceutical industry, all control, either directly or indirectly, the cancer industry. They are all government agencies or have a direct link to the government. Best summarized by Kenny Ausubel, author of When Healing Becomes a Crime: “It is important to emphasize that this confederation of interests known as organized medicine consists principally of medical politicians and business interests, not practicing doctors.”1 Granted, there are many individuals involved in this so-called war against cancer who do have a sincere desire to create a world without cancer. Unfortunately, they have been just as victimized as the cancer patients themselves.

The American Medical Association (AMA)

Founded in 1847 in Philadelphia, the American Medical Association’s (AMA) stated goals are to advance the science of medicine, promote medical ethics, and improve the health of the public.2 The AMA publishes the Journal of the American Medical Association, also known as JAMA, a peer-reviewed medical journal that publishes original research, reviews, and other medical news, which is considered the most widely circulated medical journal in the world. The principal policy-making body of the AMA is the House of Delegates.

Although one of the AMA’s goals is to improve the health of the public, what they don’t state is their goal regarding cancer, which is to limit treatment to chemo, radiation, and surgery. The AMA has a long history, one they prefer the American public not know about, of destroying the work and reputations of any individual or group attempting to cure cancer using alternative therapies.

George Henry Simmons, MD, was head of the AMA from 1899 to 1924. During this time he launched an attack against any school of medicine other than conventional allopathic schools. Any medical practitioner deviating from the traditional path of medicine was vigorously attacked and labeled an “irregular” or “quack.”3 This included chiropractors, herbalists, homeopaths, and osteopaths. Considered outcasts, they were excluded from most medical practices.

One of the worst conspirators during his reign was Morris Fishbein, MD, who reportedly never practiced a day of medicine in his life and failed his anatomy class in medical school. He was the editor of JAMA from 1925 to 1950 and was trained by Dr. Simmons. Considered by many to be a medical Mussolini of sorts, he almost single handedly tarnished the reputation of alternative therapy by labeling anyone involved in alternative medicine a “quack.”

Anyone successful in an alternative therapy is considered a threat to conventional medicine and, therefore, a quack. One of the biggest threats during Fishbein’s time in power was Harry Hoxsey, a naturopath treating cancer patients with an herbal tonic. Fishbein spent over thirty years, from the 1920s through the 1950s, persecuting Hoxsey and anyone else who dared to treat patients using his herbal formula.4

When Fishbein wrote a newspaper article entitled “Blood Money” in an attempt to slander the Hoxsey name, he was taken to court. He was found guilty in a 1949 lawsuit and Harry Hoxsey was the first man labeled a quack to defeat the AMA on charges of libel and slander.5 After the lawsuit was over, the AMA withdrew their Seal of Approval from Morris Fishbein.

Hoxsey wasn’t the only threat to the AMA’s financial power. During the 1970s and 80s, the AMA spent much time and money shedding a negative light on the chiropractic business and sought to bar chiropractors of any association with medical doctors. This resulted in chiropractors being unable to practice in hospitals and from receiving physician referrals. Finally, in 1987, the AMA was convicted in federal court of a “conspiracy to destroy and eliminate” the chiropractic business. Convicted along with the AMA were the American College of Radiologists and the American College of Surgeons.6

The National Cancer Institute (NCI)

The National Cancer Institute (NCI), an integral part of the National Institutes of Health, is the country’s primary agency for cancer research. As an agency of the federal government, the NCI receives its funding from U.S. Congress.

Just as guilty as the AMA, the NCI has also played its own part in conspiring to defeat practitioners of alternative medicine. In the late 1980s, a false report was circulated stating that Dr. Burton’s Immuno-Augmentive Therapy (IAT) contained the AIDS virus.7 The goal was to prevent patients from using Dr. Burton’s serum to treat cancer. When investigated, it was found that this report was generated by a top official at the NCI.8

As a cornerstone of the medical establishment, the NCI promotes the sale of chemo, radiation, surgery, and pharmaceutical drugs. Its goal is to shut out any competition that would interfere with its profits, namely alternative medicine. Former NCI director Samuel Broder describes the state of affairs, “The NCI has become what amounts to a government pharmaceutical company.”9

World cancer expert Dr. Samuel Epstein sums up the NCI’s narrow focus: “…the NCI, with enthusiastic support from the ACS—the tail that wags the NCI dog—has effectively blocked funding for research and clinical trials on promising non-toxic alternative cancer drugs for decades, in favor of highly toxic and largely ineffective patented drugs developed by the multibillion dollar global cancer drug industry. Additionally, the cancer establishment has systematically harassed the proponents of non-toxic alternative cancer drugs.”10 The NCI only spends about 5 percent of its annual $1.8 billion dollar budget on cancer prevention.11

The American Cancer Society (ACS)

Considered the richest “nonprofit” charity agency in the country, the American Cancer Society (ACS) was noted in 1976 to spend very little of its budget on cancer research and programs, about 26 percent.12 In contrast, it spends about 60 percent of its budget on salaries, office supplies, and miscellaneous expenses.13 About 15 percent of the budget is spent on helping patients get to doctor’s appointments, loaning out wheelchairs, and donating bandages made by volunteers.14 A large portion of the money raked in annually is from donations from the American public. Over the last twenty or thirty years, a large percentage of the budget has been coming from the pharmaceutical industry, large corporations, and the entertainment and telecommunications industry. The principal group overseeing the ACS is the House of Delegates.

Criticized in the past for not spending enough money on research, the ACS defended itself by stating it had “insufficient funds.” Suspicious of this claim, the National Information Bureau, a charity-monitoring agency, investigated this claim in 1976 and found that the ACS had over $31 million in unattached funds.15 The ACS later withdrew this claim and changed their tune, stating it “will now place research in perspective as part of overall program needs.”16 In 1992, The Chronicle of Philanthropy accused the ACS of being “more interested in accumulating wealth than in saving lives.”17 Furthermore, in 1998, the ACS was noted to have spent close to $1 million on political lobbying, an obvious violation of its legal status as a charity agency.18 In 1999 Dr. Samuel Epstein recommended an outright boycott of the ACS due to its violations. In addition, the ACS often accepts donations from companies that produce cancer drugs as well as chemical fertilizers and herbicides, thus, an obvious conflict of interest.19

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

The FDA is the reason that dozens of promising non-toxic cancer therapies are not available for use to Americans. As gatekeeper, the FDA is the proverbial...
