With delightful illustrations and engaging text, Our Dog Benji tells the story of how Benji inspires his owner to try different food and find that they’re not as fussy as they thought!
Benji is a dog who will eat anything; from daffodils to Brussels sprouts, ice cream to avocados, sandwiches to bones! Unfortunately, Benji’s young owner isn’t quite as adventurous. Our Dog Benji tells the story of how Benji gradually inspires his child owner to try different food, and their discovery that they’re not as fussy as they thought!

We all know that kids’ tastes generally aren’t very wide-ranging. While ice cream and pizza might be devoured in the blink of an eye, the dreaded vegetables are often pushed to one side of the plate. Author Pete Carter understands this phenomenon well, as he shows in the adventures of Benji. Of course, there is one food that neither dogs or kids will touch!

With amusing antics brought to life by delightful duotone illustrations and engaging text, Our Dog Benji will delight young readers. Illustrator James Henderson also happens to be Pete Carter’s nephew, making this picture book a family affair, full of heart. The perfect book to encourage fussy eaters to try a few more vegetables!

Pete Carter is a writer and photographer. He is the author of two previous books of poetry, and This is Us, a book which tells the stories of more than 200 New Zealanders in words and portraits. Pete has had articles published in magazines and poetry in anthologies. As a photographer he has had work included in group exhibitions in New Zealand and overseas, two solo exhibitions, and has sold his work to corporate clients. In 2019 Pete had a three months writing residency in rural France where he finished This Is Us and wrote half a novel. Pete lives with his wife and two dogs in Wellington, New Zealand. They have two grown up children, one who lives in Bristol and the other in Sydney. One of his dogs is the muse for Our Dog Benji; the other hopes to star in Pete’s next book. James Henderson was never far from a pencil or pen as a child, and at school was infamous for his caricatures of teachers. After studying illustration and design at Massey University, James now works as a freelance illustrator for corporate clients. For the last two years James has operated as a freelance illustrator for corporates including one of New Zealand's major banks. More recently, one of James' illustrations can now be seen on the screens of all Kiwi Bank ATM machines
