Covers concisely the principles of harness and equipment but almost various possible aspects of driving, from one horse to a team, from the show-ring to agriculture. This book is illustrated with drawings by Gisela Holstein, as well as numerous photographs from the original German edition and others featuring well-known drivers.
In this his classic work on driving and harnessing, Colonel Max Pape has recorded all that he learnt during their long friendship from Benno von Achenbach, an undisputed master of the field and to whom this book is dedicated. Max Pape's own ideas are closely associated with those of von Achenbach whose methods he has both taught and developed further. The book not only covers clearly and concisely the principles of harness and equipment but almost every possible aspect of driving, from one horse to a team, from the show-ring to agriculture. It has earned its place in driving circles throughout Europe as a standard guide and reference book. This edition has been copiously illustrated with drawings by Gisela Holstein, as well as numerous photographs from the original German edition and others featuring well-known drivers.

On the occasion of Max Pape's 65th birthday, Gustav Rau wrote in 'Saint George': 'Max Pape has been deeply engaged in the development of the sport of driving for many years, and is considered to be one of the few surviving authorities in this field. He is ... an absolute and perfect horseman, who has throughout his life been concerned with all areas of horsemanship. ... he has always been a tireless and well-informed teacher of driving, and has, with his outstanding personal skill, taught driving to many pupils. Pape was born in Paderborn and, as a young high-school boy had already taken part in the hunts of the 8th Hussars in the Senne... From 1923 until the end of 1926, Pape was head of the 4th division of the Cavalry School in Hanover, the military driving school. From 1927 to 1929, he was head of the 2nd Squadron of the 6th Driving Division in Soltau. There he founded the Drag Hunt Society and created a pack of 20 couple of which he was master. When he retired in 1929, Pape devoted himself to agriculture for a long time. But he felt himself strongly drawn back towards the Cavalry...'. From the outset of his career, Max Pape's prime interest was equestrianism. He was particularly successful as a driver of teams of four or more and was active as a judge at the major driving competitions on the continent until shortly before his death in 1977.
