Mallon and Widlund have produced an extremely detailed account of the fifth Olympic Games of the modern era. Much of the credit for the success of the fifth games goes to the Swedish organiser, Viktor Balck, and the innovations he introduced.

Bill Mallon is a cofounder and vice president of the International Society of Olympic Historians (ISOH) and the original editor of the Journal of Olympic History. He is a surgeon in Durham, North Carolina. Ture Widlund lives in Stockholm. They are also the coauthors of The 1896 Olympic Games (1997).
