Autor

Lt. General Frank E. Petersen was born in Topeka, Kansas. He enlisted in the Navy in 1950, entered the Navy Aviation Cadet Program in 1951. He completed flight training in 1952 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps becoming the first African American pilot in the history of the Corps. During the Korean and Vietnam conflicts he flew over 350 combat missions. In 1978 he was promoted to Brigadier General and became the first African American General in the United States Marine Corps. In 1983 he was promoted to Major General and to Lt. General in 1986. From 1978 until his retirement in 1988 General Petersen was the only black general in the USMC. Throughout his military career, he commanded every echelon of aviation from fighter squadron to Marine Air Wing. From 1985 to 1988 he held the title of Silver Hawk” and Grey Eagle as the senior ranking aviator in the U.S. Naval Service. General Petersen’s final military assignment was as Commander Marine Corps Combat and Development Command Quantico, Virginia. General Petersen has five children, Gayle, Dana, Frank, Lindsay and Monique. He lives on the Chesapeake Bay, in Stevensville, MD.
