The first festival on Theresienwiese was organized by the Munich citizens' militia in honor of the newlyweds Crown Prince ludwig of Bavaria and Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. On an open meadow beyond the city gates a tent was set up to accommodate the illustrious guests during the horse race. This day of celebration generated so much excitement that the decision was made to repeat the patriotic festival. Major changes to the festival occurred around 1900: the interest in carousels, theater and huge beer tents had become greater than that in the official festival program. Therefore, the residents of Munich continued to enthusiastically celebrate the Oktoberfest even after the demise of the monarchy.
