Dr Stephen Olvey was Medical Director for Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) in the USA, having served in that position from 1978 to 2003. In this capacity he helped save Alex Zanardi's life - hence Alex's foreword to the book.
The author's 'debut' as a medic at Indianapolis in 1966, where his first on-track rescue involved Graham Hill in his 'rookie' year in the Indy 500. Working with the greats of US racing; AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, Johnny Rutherford, Rick Mears, Al Unser Jr and Emerson Fittipaldi. Nigel Mansell's remarkable, and at times controversial, two seasons in CART. The story of Alex Zanardi's horrific crash in 2001 and how his life was saved thanks to rapid intervention by a team in which the author played a key part. The advances in motorsport safety and medicine brought about by the author and his peers, including his friend and colleague Prof Sid Watkins.
