Upper respiratory tract infections (URI) involve the infection and inflammation in the sinuses, nasal passages, pharynx and the larynx, and includes a range of conditions that include common colds, rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, epiglottitis, a life-threatening condition, and tracheitis. Mostly of viral origin, URI are the leading cause for morbidity. This animation evaluates the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and management of these illnesses.

Itzhak Brook, MD, MSc, is a Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington DC. He is also an Attending Physician in Pediatrics at the Georgetown University Medical Center and the past Chairman of the Anti-infective Drug Advisory Committee of the FDA. Dr. Brook is a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Society for Pediatric Research, and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, apart from being a member of more than 20 professional organizations. His research interests include the pathogenesis and therapy of polymicrobial infections, including upper respiratory tract infections. Having authored more than 700 publications and 10 textbooks, Dr. Brook serves as an Assistant Editor and member of the Editorial Board of several medical journals.
