Sigi Schmid is currently the head coach of the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer (MLS). He was head coach of the LA Galaxy in the MLS from 1999 to 2004 and led the club to an impressive 61-35-16 record as well as three championships, winning the 2002 MLS Cup, 2001 U.S. Open Cup, and the 2001 CONCACAF Champions' Cup. His .579 winning percentage ranks fifth all-time in MLS history and his 79 wins rank sixth among MLS coaches. He was also the 1999 MLS Coach of the Year. Schmid is also recognized as one of the most successful collegiate coaches of all time, accumulating a 322-63-33 (.810 winning %) record in 19 seasons at UCLA. During that time, the Bruins won three NCAA Division I National Championships and amassed a streak of 16 consecutive NCAA post-season appearances. His coaching experience also includes 13 years as a coach for the U.S. Soccer Federation at various levels, including assistant coach on the 1994 U.S. Men's World Cup team. As U-20 head coach, he led the 2005 squad to an 11th-place finish at the 2005 World Youth Championship in Holland, including a group play win over eventual world champion Argentina. Other U.S. Soccer coaching positions Schmid has held include U-20 head coach from 1998 to 1999 and a 12th place finish at the 1999 World Youth Championships; assistant coach on the 1995 U.S Pan American Team; U.S. Men's National Team assistant coach (1992 to 1994); assistant coach for the U.S. team at the 1991 World University Games; and assistant coach for the U.S. Men's "B" National Team (1989 to 1991).
