CHAPTER ONE

PREPARING FOR THE ROAD

How to Choose Your RV (Class A/B/C, Fifth Wheels, Camper Vans)

Selecting the appropriate recreational vehicle (RV) is a wise choice that depends on your vacationing style, budget, and preferred amenities. With options aplenty, such as Class A, B, C motorhomes, fifth wheels, and camper vans, knowing how they differ is key to making the best-informed decision.

  1. Class A Motorhomes: Luxury on Wheels

The largest and most upscale RVs are Class A motorhomes, which are as long and wide as buses. They typically measure between 25 and 45 feet in length and are constructed on heavy-duty frames.

These RVs have large interiors with luxurious amenities such as full kitchens, bathrooms, washer/dryers, and entertainment systems. They accommodate 4 to 8 people comfortably, so they are ideal for groups or families seeking comfort during long journeys. But their compactness can make them difficult to park and maneuver, and they tend to have fuel economy issues.

  1. Class B Motorhomes: Compact and Fuel Efficient

Class B motorhomes or camper vans are the most compact and easiest-to-maneuver RVs. Built on van chassis, they tend to be between 16 to 24 feet long. Although they are small in dimensions, they typically come with basic facilities like a small kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area for 2 to 4 people.

They are extremely easy to drive and park, including in urban areas, because of their small size, and they are better on fuel. The only drawback for big families or anyone who requires more space is that there is not much space.

  1. Class C Motorhomes: A Balance of Size and Comfort

Class C motorhomes are an in-between position between Class A's roominess and Class B's small size. They are built on a truck or van chassis with the cab section fitted to it, typically with a sleeping area in the over-cab space, with a distinctive appearance.

They have lengths from 20 to 32 feet and will accommodate 4 to 8 people. These RVs typically come with full kitchens, bathrooms, and living areas, making them perfect for families or groups that want comfort without the size of a Class A. They are typically easier to drive than Class A motorhomes and offer a great balance between space and driveability.

  1. Fifth-Wheel Trailers: Roomy Towables

Fifth-wheel trailers are large towable RVs that hook onto a unique hitch in the bed of a pickup truck. They are 25 to 40 feet long and provide spacious, multi-story living spaces. These trailers often include residential-level amenities, such as full-sized bathrooms, kitchens, and private bedrooms.

They possess a design that provides excellent stability while towing and ample storage space. However, they only tow with a compatible tow vehicle and are not motorized, so you will need to install and detach them at every destination.

  1. Travel Trailers: Budget-Friendly and Versatile

Travel trailers are RVs that are towable behind a vehicle and attach to a normal hitch on the rear of the vehicle. They come in all shapes and sizes from small teardrop trailers to big models with multiple slide-outs.

They offer flexibility since you can unhitch and use your tow vehicle on its own after you are parked. They are generally less expensive than motorhomes and fifth wheels, which is appealing to consumers watching their budgets. However, reversing and towing can be difficult for beginners, and they may offer less living area than fifth wheels.

  1. Camper Vans: Simplicity and Mobility

Camper vans are compact, self-sustaining RVs that combine transportation and living quarters in a single vehicle.

They are ideal for solo travelers or couples who desire a minimalist RV experience. Camper vans are easy to drive and park, even in urban environments, and typically have basic amenities like a bed, a small kitchen, and sometimes a bathroom. Their compact size limits living quarters and storage, but they offer unparalleled mobility and convenience for spontaneous travel.

Choosing the Right RV for You

When choosing an RV, consider these points:

  • Travel Style: Determine whether you will travel full-time, part-time, or on weekend getaways.
  • Budget: Factor in the cost of purchase, maintenance, gas, insurance, and campground fees.
  • Size and Amenities: Consider how much space and which amenities you need to feel at ease.
  • Driving and Towing: Consider how comfortable you are driving large vehicles or towing trailers.
  • Storage and Parking: Think about where you will store the RV when not in use and what type of campsites you will be going to.

By taking all these into account, you can choose an RV that suits your lifestyle and travel purpose the best. From the upper end of a Class A motorhome to the spaciousness of a fifth-wheel trailer or the compactness of a camper van, the perfect RV can improve your traveling experiences and provide an on-the-road home of comfort.
