CHAPTER 2

PLANNING YOUR RV ADVENTURE

The planning of a great RV vacation starts long before you drive. A seamless, pleasurable trip is guaranteed by careful planning, which also assists you in avoiding typical mistakes that may ruin your visit. This chapter will cover the essential elements of organizing an RV vacation, from choosing the finest locations and creating a route map to comprehending campground possibilities and setting a travel budget.

Careful planning will help you get the most out of any vacation, whether it's a seasonal road trip, a cross-country adventure, or a picturesque weekend escape. In order to keep your trip stress-free, we'll also go over important topics like weather, gas stops, and safety precautions. You'll be prepared to take advantage of the freedom and thrill that come with living in an RV if you have the proper strategy in place!

Choosing the right RV: Class A, B, C

From compact and basic tow trailers to mobile homes with granite countertops and king-sized bedrooms, recreational vehicles come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

When choosing between several motorhome classes or travel trailer types, it's critical to comprehend the specifics involved. For example, the benefits and drawbacks of various RV kinds, locations that particular RVs may and cannot go to, and even the license requirements for RV classes.

Fortunately, it's not too hard to understand the categories! Trailers can be classified as fifth wheels or tow trailers, while motorhomes are classified as A, B, and C. Here, we'll examine each category's contents, potential advantages and disadvantages, and the approximate cost of an RV.

The first thing to realize about RV kinds is that the term "Classes" only applies to motorhomes, which are RVs with a living area and a motor vehicle on the same chassis. No towing is necessary! Additionally, passengers can always access the camper's inside while traveling.

Class A Motorhomes

Class A motorhomes are the largest coaches available and encompass a wide range of luxury features. Built on a single chassis, they range in size from 26 to 45 feet and may have upwards of two axles; bigger coaches typically have three axles overall.

Class A motorhomes can be up to eight feet wide, while some states permit widths of up to eight and a half feet. Impressively, they weigh between 13,000 and 30,000 pounds, which provides some insight into the potential of their interiors.

What makes them so luxurious?

Class A motorhomes provide just as many conveniences as a typical house, if not more in many situations! A king-sized bed, two bathrooms, a washing and dryer, a spacious living space with couches and recliners, a dining table, a television, a fireplace, and a fully furnished kitchen with a dishwasher, microwave, oven, stovetop, refrigerator, and freezer are all standard features of these coaches.

Many have slideouts as well. Mahlon Miller created these gadgets in 1990, but they are more space-creators than space-savers. An eight-foot-wide RV's wall and a portion of its floor can be moved outward with a single button, adding more square footage in a matter of seconds! An eight-foot room can become nearly fifteen feet wide in many Class A RVs thanks to slideouts on opposite walls of the same space.

Concerning space, Class As has an unmatched capacity for carrying goods. A large portion of the camper's underside is used for storage because the living area's floor is usually several feet above the chassis. This implies that it will be easy to pack items like outdoor rugs, bicycles, lawn chairs, and athletic goods!

A Class A motorhome may have a diesel or gasoline engine. Diesel usually has more torque, a better towing capacity, a longer lifespan, and a higher resale value. Because the engine is in the back of the coach, they are also often quieter, which is another reason diesel engines are known as "pushers." Nevertheless, even though gas coaches normally require more maintenance than diesel, they also often cost less to operate and maintain.

Who tends to own them and where can they go?

Class A motorhomes are a great option for retirees and anyone who leads a nomadic lifestyle because they are highly popular with those who intend to travel frequently. They are also frequently seen transporting pop singers and bigger touring acts across the nation!

Users rapidly discover that these giants aren't appropriate for every travel destination because of their size and weight. If you decide on a Class A, make sure your route avoids any fast curves or steep, potholed roads, which are more prevalent on back roads. Another thing to look at before you arrive is that these can need more electrical amperage than most campground RV sites provide.

Many people decide to tow a car behind their Class A motorhome even though they are self-contained and do not need to be towed. Performing routine tasks is easier in a smaller automobile, so towing a car is a crucial factor. You don't want to load up the entire coach just to go sightseeing in the area!

Pros

● Contains all residential amenities on board.
● Spacious and potentially lavish.
● Do not need a towing vehicle yet can tow another vehicle.
● Plenty of storage space.

Cons

● The cost of buying, insuring, and repairing is expensive.
● May necessitate a specific driver's license.
● Lower fuel efficiency.
● Frequently need to be parked while not in use in properly equipped facilities, because many localities do not allow them in driveways or parked on streets.
● Many need 50-amp hookups from campgrounds.
● Driving one may require particular training.

Class B Motorhomes

Class B motorhomes are the charming compact RVs commonly known as "campervans." They are substantially smaller than Class As and typically weigh between 6,000 and 8,000 pounds. They're also almost the same length as a typical van, measuring between 17 and 19 feet.

What distinguishes these little workhorses from conventional vans is that they are fully equipped camping vehicles. Designers have put a lot of creativity into making places this size liveable.

To reduce space, a lot of these vehicles use concepts from nautical technology. They frequently come with marine shower toilets, which may seem a little unusual, but they function well because they combine a basin, toilet, and shower in one stall!

Compared to a Class A motorhome, the kitchen is much smaller and typically only has a sink, a small burner, and little counter space.

Class Bs frequently have imaginatively designed sleeping areas as well. Some Class Bs have beds made up of folding sofas and futons, however, some do have a queen-sized mattress in the back, possibly hung over a cargo compartment. One example of this is a dining table and a bench on both sides. The table lowers to the level of both benches and with a few pillows on top, it may accommodate one or two people for sleeping.

Who are they for?

Those on a tighter budget, requiring a smaller car, or seeking a transportable base for their outdoor camping endeavors are the ideal candidates for Class B vehicles. They are suggested for couples traveling without kids and for those who don't have time for frequent long journeys. They often charge between $40,000 and $80,000.

Even though a Class B motorhome may accommodate up to six people, it can rapidly feel claustrophobic. Simply said, unless you intend to have extra lodgings, such as a tent or cabin, the campervan is best suited for no more than two people. Some have built-in slideouts, but the majority do not. It might be doable for families with one or two kids, but keep in mind that there is very little room for storage, so packing light will be essential.

When compared to Class A motorhomes, Class B motorhomes lose out on creature amenities and space, but they make up for it in charm and affordability. In addition to being a fun way to downsize daily living, campers fit in standard parking places, use significantly less fuel, and have lower toll costs. Additionally, as they are not much larger than many vans and are not particularly challenging to operate, they do not require a specific license.

Pros:

● Economical and enjoyable.
● Fuel efficiency is great compared to other RVs.
● Easily transported.
● Lower cost

Cons:

● Tight quarters, limited storage space.
● Not suitable for more than two persons.
● There is no place for utilities like laundry, dishwashers, and other larger equipment.

Class C Motorhomes

Although these vehicles are between Classes A and B in terms of size and comfort, it may seem a little odd that they are classified as Class C motorhomes.

Class C motorhomes are easily identifiable by their characteristic cab that extends over the cockpit. They are...
