This text follows Muir on his travels through the waters of south-eastern Alaska in a series of articles he wrote for the San Francisco "Daily Evening Bulletin". Here the original versions of "letters" have been collected and republished.

Robert Engberg is social studies department chairperson at Mission Bay High School in San Diego. He has studied Muir's life for some twenty years. He is the editor of John Muir to Yosemite and Beyond (with Donald Wesling), and John Muir Summering in the Sierra also published by the University of Wisconsin Press. Bruce D. Merrell is Alaska bibliographer for Anchorage Municipal Libraries and a director of the Alaska Historical Society.
