This dictionary contains an A-Z of over 5000 Scottish placenames. Each entry gives the district location, and the meaning and origin of the name. The Gaelic origins of placenames are emphasized. The book is a combination of historical, geographical and cultural detail. The introduction includes a survey of the many languages which have contributed to Scotland's national heritage. Iain Taylor is also the author of "Teach Yourself Gaelic".
Iain Taylor graduated in Celtic Studies from Aberdeen University and taught Gaelic at primary, secondary and tertiary levels in Uist, Perthshire and Skye. A native of Elgin in Moray, he worked for some years in the Gaelic department of Scottish Television before going on to lecture at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig , the Gaelic College in Skye, from which he retired in 2020. David Ross has written numerous books on aspects of Scottish history and culture, some serious and some less so. His most recent is The Killing Time, a study of Scotland between the Covenant of 1638 and the Union of 1707. Scottish humour is a particular interest, and he is compiler and editor of the best-selling Awa' an' Bile Yer Heid, an anthology of choice Scottish insults.
