Confusingly, the nearest station to The Brockley Jack isn't Brockley, but Crofton Park, but the Crofton Park Jack doesn't have the same ring to it... This is one we've been to on numerous occasions, which should tell you that it's a good 'un. And it is a good pub. Don't expect spit and sawdust - rather a very comfortable and clean saloon, maintained immaculately and with friendly service to boot. Everytime we've been there the landlord or staff have walked around chatting with customers which is very nice to see and a wide range of clientele is welcomed. There's a range of beers and ales on offer, including Belhaven and IPA, complimented by a comprehensive Greene King food menu. While we no longer live in the area, a trip to the Brockley Jack is still a must. A pub with a wide range of beers, superb staff and a relaxing interior - it's worth the trek!

When the Carpenters Arms closed a couple of years ago, we naturally expected conversion into flats awaited it. So you can imagine our excitement to discover back in the Autumn of 2007 that it had reopened. If nothing else, it's a little piece of East End pub history; many pubs in the area lay claim to associations with the Kray twins (some more tenuous than others), but the Carpenters was apparently owned by them and run by their dear old Mum. So, what's it like now? In a word: 'nice' (or if you want two: 'very nice'). Not the largest of places, there's been a tasteful, comfortable pub refurb with an attractive bar area, photos of the local area dotted around and a pretty, small back garden. You'll find it a pleasantly busy pub with a nice mix of customers and impeccable service. There's always an excellent choice of drink, too - three ales on tap, an above average selection of lager and some nice bottled choices. We have nothing but positive things to say about spending time here - we wonder if Mrs Kray would have agreed?
Churchill Arms

One of the great pubs in London and it's been consistently one of the greats for a long, long time. You get a good pint of Fullers, one of the best pints of Guinness around town, traditional food and one of the first (if not the first) pubs to serve Thai food. Eclectic decoration and winner of the 'Boozers on Bloom' award, a mixed clientele and a genial landlord go together to make one of the best pubs in London. And they keep winning awards, receiving Fuller's coveted Griffin Award for the third time and Stella's "Love Your Local" award. The only downside, if there is one, is that so many people have cottoned on to the Churchill, that it gets very crowded, especially if you want to eat. Still, if they're open, what are you hanging around for?
Colton Arms, Hammersmith

A small affair with a main bar and two tiny back alcoves and a wee patio garden at the rear; the rural feel stems as much from its original oak furniture and handled pint glasses as from the courteous bar staff. Such behaviour could easily result in a faux and touristy atmosphere, but there's nothing contrived here. With excellently kept beers - and the sort of warm and homely atmosphere gastropubs strive for yet seldom attain - the pub enjoys a mixed clientele and surely your patronage as well (and while we're at it, a preservation order wouldn't be amiss). On a recent visit here, a surprisingly-camouflaged flatscreen telly had been installed above the fireplace but not for Sky Sports, just terrestrial TV. The Colton Arms is still an out-and-out classic of a boozer.
Dog & Bell, Deptford

Should you find yourself thirsty in Deptford, the Dog & Bell is indubitably your best bet. Unlike quite a few of the pubs in the area, this pub is neither grubby nor intimidating. It's a well-kept establishment with good quality real ales on tap and superb bottled beers in the fridge. Friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere amongst the locals are the order of the day. A bar billiards table adds to the charm and there's a rear terrace for those rare sunny days. A decent menu is offered and a changing range of art for sale adorns the walls.

It's been a while since we've been out to this one and we're delighted that it's remained a great boozer. Located round the back of Streatham Go-Karting track, on the corner in a grid of Victorian terrace houses, this place oozes an updated but genuine charm that other revamped gastro pubs can only dream of. 5 ales were on pump (including Wandle, Pride and the excellent Progress by the little Pilgrim Brewery in Reigate). The service was very friendly and they had no problem in setting up a tab for us as we were eating. The food in question was very good and just the right side of a tenner. Behind the bar, the barman was using his free time well in arranging an assortment of music which was perfect for the atmosphere. There was also a turntable back there which we're sure gets some use at weekends. Although this is a small pub, they've managed to tuck a pool table in around the back so the drinkers and eaters don't have to shift their chairs and keep a look out for errant cues bumping into them. But, for us at least, one of the pub's greatest attributes is its inclusion within the local community. You name it; it does it - jumble sales, book clubs, quiz nights and loads more. Worth checking out their website for a full list of upcoming events, as well as their opening hours (they don't open until 4pm on weekdays). And to top it off in these cooler winter nights, it's got a real fireplace. Top marks for a top pub.

We love this old place. The Grapes is a quaint, narrow, little pub in a very old terrace on the north bank of the river at Limehouse. There's a tiny balcony at the back that you can squeeze onto, if you're lucky, and enjoy views of Limehouse Reach and Rotherhithe. The beer is pretty good and the décor old and genuine. But there's more to it, there's a sort of timeless, traditional atmosphere about the place, in an area where property booms and yuppiedom have wreaked their worst. The restaurant upstairs specialises in fish and it's pretty good too. If you do go, try and book the table that looks out over the river (you need to book anyway, it's pretty popular). The food is traditional seafood and is entirely dependent on what is good at the market that day. It's well presented, but can be a little pricey, downstairs in the bar the food is simpler and cheaper. The service is friendly and prompt and, with the beer, the ambience and the fare on offer, what more could you want? It just looks, acts and feels like a proper English pub. It's just perfect for the area.

Another pub in the area we've known for a few years now, the Gunmakers hasn't taken the nosedive a lot of pubs in its situation has - if anything, it's been consistently good since it opened. Hidden down a side road off the top of Leather Lane Market, this is a bit of a gem and, despite the local designer bars, hasn't given in to the trends to be another style bar - and it's worth the deviation. It's had another update and while it looks more gastro in colour, it's not changed conceivably. They've still got new and more comfortable banquettes to go with the ornate pub mirrors that make it feel a lot bigger than it actually is. The back room is still stylish and pretty comfortable. There are usually four choices on the taps, ranging from well known brands to guests from all over the country - Woodforde's Wherry was next to a decent Mild and Purity's Pale Ale (sorry, we can't actually remember what other beers was on). Not open on the weekends, this does cater largely for local workers and still manages to retain that local feel.
Lamb

The Lamb is a genial old boozer with lots of Victorian charm - and that's just the locals. This place has been one of the top pubs in London for a long, long time and still it continues to maintain high standards. The beer's good (Young's), the food's pretty decent, it's got some quaint Victorian fixtures and fittings,...
