"The Last Step"tells the story, written by Rick Ridgeway, a member of the expedition team, of the 1978 first American ascent of K2. It was the third ascent overall of K2 and the first on which any members reached the summit without using supplemental oxygen on the final push.
In September 1978, Rick Ridgeway, Jim Wickwire, Lou Reichardt and John Roskelley stood on the summit of K2, the first Americans ever to achieve this victory. Rick Ridgeway is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, author, photographer, and environmentalist based in Ojai, California. He was included in National Geographic Adventure's "Hall of Fame" in 2008-2009. His writings and photographs have appeared in many publications.
