The area that is now the city of Aachen already had settles in the Neolithic age. Research shows that at that time ( 3000 - 2500 BC ) the Lousberg flint supplies had diminished. Later the Romans established thermal baths for their militia in the city; it is believed that the first facilities evolved at the end of the 1st century in Büchel.King Pippin the younger, had previously spent some time in Aachen. It was in this context that we find the first written records referring to the city as an " Aquis Villa " in 765 AD. As residence of the carolingians and later the coronation place for 31 German kings, Aachen experienced a period of prosperity. In 18 century Aachen was developed as a health resort.Thanks to the university, Aachen is not only a historic metropolis and popular health resort, but also a centre of modern technology.
