The degree to which West Berlin was threatened by the Warsaw Pact is made clear in the CIA map of the Berlin region dating to 1985. Museums and information centres that make reference to the difficult times Berlin experienced between 1945 and 1989 are illustrated on the map; in addition to military cemeteries, memorials, cenotaphs, and air raid shelters from this era, as well as several relicts of the national socialist dictatorship, which continued to be used in some instances.
