This volume offers a comprehensive, research-based analysis of gang transformation in the context of globalization, technological change, and shifting socio-political environments. Taking the group as the core unit of analysis, it traces the evolution of gangs from loosely affiliated youth collectives engaged in local conflict to complex, network-oriented criminal organizations operating across national and transnational boundaries. It identifies three key facilitators of modern gang networks: group processes, outgroup embeddedness, and interaction space.

The volume also examines how fragile states, digital technologies, and global mobility contribute to the expansion of gang influence. Gang networks are framed as threat multipliers destabilizing institutions, challenging law enforcement, and undermining state integrity.

As the foundational entry in a three-volume series, Volume 1 is a critical resource for criminal justice researchers and law enforcement professionals seeking to understand the structural dynamics of gang networks and their implications for security and governance.
