Introduction to Employment Law and Practice explains the key rights of employees and workers and the ways in which disputes with employers may be resolved. Chapter 1 introduces some basic concepts of employment law, including the status of employees and workers. Chapter 2 explains how employees and workers are protected from discrimination. In Chapter 3 the legal and practical aspects of recruitment are considered, together with the nature of a valid employment contract. Chapter 4 covers the range of family-friendly rights, including maternity and paternity rights. Finally, in Chapter 8 the communication skills required by employment lawyers are reviewed, both for individual clients and also for representatives of employers.

Lisa Kidger is Associate Dean for Undergraduate Law at the University of London. She is an author in the areas of Employment Law, Legal Research, and Legal Skills, as well as being a learning technologist with a particular interest in virtual learning environments.
