The reform of the education system must be based on the durability and the synthesizing power of knowledge as well as the idea of education. However, institutions of higher education have to fulfil the functional requirements of a business enterprise and are committed to the economization of knowledge. The authors of this volume deal with the internationalization and the Europeanization of the system of higher education, the demands of comparability and occupational qualification made on successive bachelor's and master's degrees, the effects of the initiative for excellence as well as the consequences of the reforms for the humanities. Is this series of reforms really the end of the idea of a community of teachers and students as well as the end of Humboldt's endeavors to reconcile usefulness and independence, the relationship to society and the autonomy of the university using the concept of science and the humanities?
