For the past twenty years, religious communities have been experiencing a worldwide boom. There is not much to be said for the theory that religions have been relegated to being a private matter. What has in fact been happening is that demands are being made in public on behalf of religions. In this volume, which resulted from a conference at the Max Weber College, legal experts, sociologists and scholars in religious studies analyze the interaction between constitutional laws and religions. Taking a look at the situation in Germany, looking back at the Roman Empire and making comparisons with the USA, they show that the legal conceptions of religions do have a long history, that they differ significantly from one another and have an influence on the public nature of religions, including Islam.
