The Yearbook of International Disaster Law aims to represent a hub for critical debate in this area of research and policy and to foster the interest of academics, practitioners, stakeholders and policy-makers on legal and institutional issues relevant to all forms of natural, technological and human-made hazards. This Yearbook primarily addresses the international law dimension of relevant topics, alongside important regional and national dimensions relevant for further development of legal and policy initiatives. In the Thematic Section of Volume 6, entitled ‘Technology and Disasters’, distinguished scholars seek to explore international law implications of how technologies are linked to disasters, both looking at high-risk technological activities and in terms of how technological developments have largely contributed to a number of improvements in disaster management and prevention, making it possible to reduce the impact of disasters.

Giulio Bartolini, Department of Law, Roma Tre University. Full professor of international law, lecturer of “International Disaster Law” at the Geneva Academy of IHL and HRL and Director of courses on “International Disaster Law” in cooperation with the IFRC and the Sanremo International Institute of Humanitarian Law. Marie Aronsson-Storrier, School of Law, University College Cork. Marie has published widely on international law and disasters, with a particular focus on the creation and reduction of disaster risk (The Cambridge Handbook of Disaster Risk Reduction and International Law, CUP, 2019; Defining Disaster: Disciplines and Domains, Edward Elgar, 2022; Research Handbook on Disasters and International Law, 2nd edition, Edward Elgar, 2024). Dug Cubie, School of Law, University College Cork. Building on over 10 years’ practice in humanitarian action, Dug has written widely on disaster law, climate migration and the law of humanitarian assistance (The International Legal Protection of Persons in Humanitarian Crises, Hart, 2017). Emanuele Sommario, Institute of Law and Politics (DIRPOLIS), Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa. Associate Professor of International Law and Jean Monnet Chair in “European and International Human Rights Standards in Conflicts and Disasters”. Emanuele is also a consultant and lecturer for the EU Civil Protection Mechanism’s training activities. Anastasia Telesetsky, J.D., Professor at Cal Poly, former chair of the American Society of International Law’s Disaster Law Interest Group, with a research focus on environmental disaster risk reduction (International Law of Disaster Relief, Cambridge, 2014).
