This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the sealings and sealing practice in the private Archive of Šilwa-teššup from the 1925 – 1931 excavations at Nuzi (modern Yorgan Tepe) in northeastern Iraq. It is based on the reedition of the texts (Das Archiv des Šilwa-teššup vols. 1-7) by Gernot Wilhelm and the author’s own drawings of the actual seal impressions.
The text reviews the Nuzi excavations, examines the archaeological context of the archive and revises its historical setting. The textual and art historical analysis of the seals is followed by a glossary, concordances, indices, a bibliography and photographic plates. The catalogue registers the seals by tablet and by design (scale 2:1) with a complete listing of associated rooms, text types, people, functions and relative dates. 59 figures of line drawings grouped by design, family, function, region and style supplement the text.
