Charting the development of the legal protection of human rights in Africa, each volume in this series examines the position at the levels of the United Nations, the Organization of African Unity, and the national legal systems of all the countries in Africa, as it was on the first day of the year under review. The main objective of the series to contribute towards the development of an indigenous African-human-rights jurisprudence. This second volume in the series covers the situation as it was on 1st January 1997. It contains documents, updated charts of ratification, constitutional provisions enacted during the last year, and extensive commentary on the African Charter system as well as the national legal systems of 12 African countries.
