On July 15, 2016, elements of the military attempted to carry out a coup against President Erdogan. The attempted coup left at least 241 citizens dead. In the aftermath, the government declared a state of emergency, with Erdogan's AKP Party turning a crisis into an opportunity, transforming this pressure into a full-scale purge, and closing down hundreds of media outlets, lawyers' associations and NGOs.
