The work fills a further gap in the academic literature, as within Germany, researchers usually have to rely on Police Crime Statistics which provide only a limited and partial view of the situation. The book also casts a light on important and little examined topics such as police officers as victims of violence, and institutional abuse.The volume provides valuable insights on an under-researched subject and will be an important resource for academics and researchers internationally.

Dirk Baier is Vice Director of the Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony, Germany. His research interests are in the areas of Victimisation; Juvenile Delinquency; Deviant Behaviour; Xenophobia and Right-wing Extremism; Media Consumption; Attitudes towards Crime; Analysis of Crime Statistics; and Quantitative Research Methods. He has published widely on these and related areas in both English and German. Christian Pfeiffer is Director of the Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony, Germany. His areas of research include: The increase in the number of prisoners as expression of a change in the prosecution of criminal offences; Crime and violence among young people, truancy and violence in schools; Victims' experiences and self-reported delinquency among ethnic minorities; Violence within the family and its consequences; and Function, daily practice and self-image of the police. He has published on these and related areas in both English and German.
