International Economic Law and African Development discusses international perspectives on African law and economic development in the light of broader globalisation imperatives. It is the third in what can loosely be described as a series on Africa and gobalisation by the Mandela Institute (the first two being Laurence Boulle (ed) Globalisation and Governance (Siber Ink 2011) and Emmanuel T Laryea, Nokuhle Madolo and Franziska Sucker (eds) International Economic Law - Voices of Africa (Siber Ink 2012)). The conversation on law and African economies continues in this book, in the light of Africa's increasingly sophisticated participation in all facets of the contemporary world. It offers a collection of essays from Africans, whether living on the continent or abroad, complemented by the writings of empathetic non-Africans writing from an African perspective. They are metaphorically rooted in African soil not only in terms of subject-matter but also in terms of the perspectives they provide. African contributions to the debates on global themes may presage greater African engagement in the global political economy in the future.
The Mandela Institute is a centre within the School of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand and undertakes teaching, research and capacity development in different areas with particular reference to international trade, investment law and global finance.

Laurence Boulle is Professor of Law at the Thomas More Law School, ACU, Sydney and Adjunct Professor at Bond University, Queensland, Australia and at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He was formerly Professor of Law at Bond University and Issy Wolfson Professor of Law and Director of the Mandela Institute at the University of Witwatersrand. He has taught and published in the areas of international investment law, globalisation and alternative dispute resolution. He is chair of the Mediator Standards Board in Australia and is a current member of the ICSID panel of conciliators for investor-state disputes. Dr Emmanuel T Laryea is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Monash University, Australia, and a Fellow at the Tim Fischer Centre for Global Trade and Finance, Bond University, Australia. He obtained his LLB from the University of Ghana, his LLM from the University of Glasgow, and his PhD from Bond University. Emmanuel taught at the University of Ghana, Bond University and Lancaster University, United Kingdom, before joining Monash in 2001. He also practised law with a commercial law firm in Ghana. Franziska Sucker is a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, School of Law, Johannesburg, South Africa, and a doctoral candidate at the Universitat Frankfurt am Main, Germany. She was a visiting research fellow at the World Trade Institute, Berne, Switzerland and a visiting researcher at the South African Institute for Advanced Constitutional, Public, Human Rights & International Law, Johannesburg.
