Die ausreichende Versorgung der Bevölkerung mit Grundnahrungsmitteln war schon in der Antike eines der zentralen Staatsziele. Für Rom, wie auch für andere große Städte der antiken Welt, gab es daher neben dem freien Markt ein öffentliches Versorgungssystem, welches die Lebensmittelversorgung der Stadtbevölkerung sicherstellen sollte. Verschiedene Berufsgenossenschaften (Korporationen) waren in dieses System eingebunden. Die vorliegende Dissertation untersucht Art und Umfang der rechtlichen Einbindung dieser Korporationen und der einzelnen Berufsträger in das stadtrömische Versorgungssystem. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei der Frage, inwieweit sich die Tätigkeit in den Korporationen unter rechtlichen Gesichtspunkten auf die persönliche und wirtschaftliche Entscheidungsfreiheit der Verpflichteten auswirkte.

Ensuring a sufficient food supply for the population was a central goal of states as far back as antiquity. In Rome, as in other cities of the ancient world, a public supply system operated alongside the free market to ensure the supply of provisions for the inhabitants of the city. Various corporations were involved in this system. The dissertation on which this book is based examines the nature and scope of the legal bonds of these corporations and of individual officials within the Roman state supply system. Particular attention is given to the question of how great an effect these corporations had in a legal sense on the personal and economic freedom of office-holders.
