Law and Economics is a method of analyzing laws, legal processes, and judicial decisions using the concerns and techniques of neoclassical economics. This two-volume book deals with the theory of Law and Economics and its applications in the context of India. It is written with an objective to convey the principles and use of this discipline, based on real-world examples, to lawyers and economists as well as others including policy-makers, analysts, civil-society observers, and so on, who do not have formal training in law and economics.

Shubhashis Gangopadhyay is currently the Research Director of India Development Foundation, Director of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shiv Nadar University, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He obtained his PhD in Economics from Cornell University, USA, in 1983 and joined the Indian Statistical Institute where he became a Professor in 1991. In 2003, he became the founder-Director of India Development Foundation, an independent research institution. He was awarded a doctorate (honoris causa) by the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, in October 2006. In 2008, the year of the global financial crisis, he was appointed Advisor to the Finance Minister, Government of India. He is the Chief Editor of the Journal of Emerging Market Finance and has been on the editorial boards of Journal of Financial Stability and Review of Development Economics. He is a member of the Board of the Centre for Analytical Finance (Indian School of Business, Hyderabad) and International Development Enterprise India. He has been a member of the Bankruptcy Task Force of the Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD), Columbia University; the International Advisory Board of the Centre for Law and Economics of Financial Markets (Copenhagen Business School); the South Asia Chief Economist’s Advisory Council of the World Bank; and the board of Industrial Reconstruction Bank of India. Currently, he is also an advisor to the Competition Commission of India. He is also the founder-President of the Society for the Promotion of Game Theory and Its Applications. He has published widely in international journals and has a number of books to his credit on economics and finance. His published work (books) includes Waiting to Connect (co-authored), 2008; Economic Reforms for the Poor (co-edited), 2000; Counting the Poor: Where Are the Poor in India (co-authored), 1998; The Institutions Governing Financial Markets (edited), 1996; Enabling Financial Institutions (coauthored), 1997; Economic Theory and Development Policy (co-edited), 1992; and Economic Development and Policy (co-edited), 1991. V. Santhakumar is currently Professor, Azim Premji University, Bangalore. He had been a faculty, for 15 years (1996–2011), and is currently a Visiting Professor at the Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum. He worked as a full-time volunteer in a major non-governmental organisation called Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad. He completed doctoral research from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He has held postdoctoral scholarships at the Wageningen Agricultural University, Netherlands, and Vanderbilt University, United States. V. Santhakumar has also carried out a number of consultant assignments for the Asian Development Bank, United Nations Environment Programme and United Nations Development Programme in different states of India, and in Tajikistan, Palestine, Laos and so on. He has received the research medal and the outstanding research award of the Global Development Network, during its initial years. He specialises in institutional issues of environment, natural resources, energy and infrastructure. In addition to publishing in international journals, he has authored Analysing Social Opposition to Reforms (2008), Economic Analysis of Institutions: A Practical Guide (2011) and Economics in Action: An Easy Guide for Development Practitioners (2013)—all published by SAGE India. He has also co-edited the two-volume series on Law and Economics (2013) published by SAGE India.
