Written by a physicist who had first-hand experience of the nuclear reactor accident at Chernobyl, this book gives his account of events at the reactor as well as the consequences of the disaster. The author then presents his own proposals for the future safety of nuclear plants.

The author of this account of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor is the deputy head of a scientific group from the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences which dealt with the accident and its consequences. The first part of the book covers events at the reactor and in the 30 kilometre zone surrounding the plant, as well as the consequences of the accident. Then the author concentates on the overall scale of the effects, including future aspects and proposals for reactor safety.
