Engineering Thermodynamics: Advanced Modeling of Energy Systems and Nuclear Cycles is a two-volume set comprising Advanced Modeling of Thermodynamic Energy Components and Systems (Volume I) and Advanced Modeling of Thermodynamic Cycles of Nuclear Power Plants (Volume II). It addresses two critical gaps in thermodynamics education: energy systems under off-design conditions and detailed modeling of Thermodynamic Cycles of Nuclear Power Plants (TCNPPs).
Volume I covers thermodynamic and technological modeling of energy components (pumps, compressors, expansion devices, heat exchangers, combustion chambers), accounting for their technological specificities and behavior under varying conditions. Volume II explores nuclear reactor physics and presents detailed studies of water-steam cycles, gas turbine cycles, supercritical CO2 cycles, combined cycles, and applications including desalination and hydrogen production.
This collection serves as a useful, comprehensive reference for mechanical, energy, and nuclear engineering researchers and graduate students.
Renaud Gicquel served as Full Professor and later Distinguished Professor at PSL University, France, directing its Centre for Energy Studies (1987-2004). A graduate of École des Mines de Paris, France with a doctorate from Paris VI University, France, Dr. Gicquel’s passion for integrating technology with thermodynamics education led him to develop Thermoptim, an innovative software widely used for energy system simulation and teaching, and author over 80 papers and three books. He has also created three MOOCs, democratizing access to advanced energy concepts globally. Dr. Gicquel’s career spans numerous, notable international roles: Special Assistant to the UN Secretary General for the Conference on New and Renewable Energy Sources (1980), senior positions at France’s Ministry for Research and CNRS, and co-founding the Mediterranean Energy Observatory (1986).
