New innovative treatment methods in pharmaceutical technology have the potential to revolutionize healthcare, offering newfound hope to patients with conditions that were once thought to be incurable. This comprehensive new two-volume reference provides detailed explanations of the procedures involved in the development and manufacture of biopharmaceuticals as well as the uses and applications in healthcare and medicine.
The books cover the uses of novel technologies for production, formulation, and synthesis of biological substances from the living organisms, which act as drug molecules for the treatment and/or prevention of various diseases and/or syndromes. Expanding beyond the scope of manufacturing, the books also explore the practical uses of biopharmaceuticals, demonstrating their effectiveness in the treatment of various illnesses, such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, and infectious diseases. The books also delve into the difficulties and possibilities linked to the advancement of biopharmaceuticals, offering valuable perspectives on the future of this swiftly changing domain.
Volume 1: Exploring Cutting-Edge Innovations and Applications first offers an introduction and overview of pharmaceutical technology, covering the principals and science of biotechnology. It then goes on to discuss specific pharmaceutical biotechnologies, including:
genetic engineering, a process that uses laboratory-based technologies to alter the DNA makeup of an organism;
protein engineering, to develop valuable proteins through the design and production of unnatural polypeptides;
recombinant DNA technology, which involves using enzymes and various laboratory techniques to manipulate and isolate DNA segments of interest; and
microbial biotransformation, which is vital to human survival because it transforms absorbed nutrients (food, oxygen, etc.) into substances required for normal body functions.
Volume 2: Current Developments in Biopharmaceuticals delves further into pharmaceutical technology, covering a broad range of specialized areas, including
biotherapeutics, or drug therapy products where the active substance is extracted or produced from a biological source;
the principals and science of vaccinology, for the prevention of many known diseases and for the development of vaccines for new diseases;
bioprocess and fermentation technology, which utilizes microorganisms and enzymes to produce compounds that can be used in pharmaceutical development;
analytical techniques for biologics characterization, to help provide an understanding of the physical and chemical properties of biopharmaceutical materials;
regulatory approvals and patent challenges, such as, for example, balancing an interest for safety and efficacy with an interest for timely access;
blood and blood-derived products, such as whole blood and other blood components for transfusion, and plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs);
advanced enzyme technology, for the production, isolation, purification, and use of enzymes either in the soluble or immobilized form for medical purposes;
advanced gene therapy in clinical management, which involves replacing or inactivating disease-causing genes or to introduce new genes to treat a specific disease;
advanced cell therapies in clinical management, which involves transplantation of human cells to replace or repair damaged tissue and/or cells.
With the comprehensive coverage presented here, the two-volume Advances in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology will be an invaluable reference book for the students of pharmacy and biotechnology as well as an excellent resource for pharmacy industry professionals and others.
Vivek P. Chavda, MPharm, is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology at the L. M. College of Pharmacy, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Before joining academia, he served in the biologics industry for almost eight years in research and development with two successful regulatory filings at Lupin Biotech (Pune) and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratory (Hyderabad). He has more than 150 national and international publications, nearly 20 book chapters, several books, one patent in progress, as well as numerous newsletter articles to his credit. His research interests include development of biologics processes and formulations, medical device development, nano-diagnostics, long-acting parenteral formulations, and nano-vaccines. He earned his BPharm and MPharm degrees (with gold medals) at Gujarat Technological University, Gujarat, India. Zhe-Sheng (Jason) Chen, MD, PhD, is currently a Professor at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at St. John’s University, Queens, New York, USA. Dr. Chen is an editor-in-chief of the Journal of Cancer Research Updates and New Developments on Chemistry, an editor of the African Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, a regional editor of Recent Patents on Anticancer Drugs Discovery, a guest editor of Current Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, as well as an editorial board member of more than 20 journals and a reviewer of more than 170 peer-reviewed journals. He is also an ad hoc reviewer of grants for The National Institutes of Health (USA), NCI Special Emphasis Review Panel, and OmniBus SEP-10, as well as a State Grant Reviewer for Louisiana and reviewer for grants for New Zealand, Poland, China, Hungary, Netherlands, etc. As a consultant to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and health industry organizations, Dr. Chen commands invitations for presentations, keynote addresses, and conference chairman.
