This textbook for graduate veterinary students introduce the concept, objectives, and definition of One Health and discuss the advancements made and challenges in One Health around endemic and emerging zoonotic diseases. It provides a framework of basic principles of zoonoses, prevention, control, and eradication. It presents diverse group of zoonoses, including viral, bacterial, rickettsia, fungal, and parasitic. It discusses the vital steps on One health in recognizing the critical importance of collaborative, cross-disciplinary approaches for responding to emerging and resurging diseases, and emphasize wildlife health as an essential component of global disease prevention, surveillance, control, and mitigation. Further, the book examines the potential of new emerging zoonotic disease as a tool for bioterrorism. It also explores the applications and advancements of bioinformatics in veterinary research. This textbook is an essential source for students of veterinary sciences, and also for public health professionals, veterinarians, and physicians.
Dr. Ripan Biswas is working as Assistant Professor in Veterinary Public Health in West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, Kolkata, India. Dr. Biswas is committed with teaching for last three years and having research interest in food borne bacterial infections, zoonotic diseases, wild life, bacterial biofilm and One Health practice. Previously he served as Veterinary Officer under Government of West Bengal (India) for nearly one decade and he worked with domesticated animals, wild animal and birds. Dr. Biswas has published numerous national and international research articles and review articles in the peer-reviewed national and international journals. He has also published two monographs, two manuals and several popular articles as well as scientific articles. He is a life member of various scientific societies and organizations like Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists and Association of Public Health Veterinarians, India. Dr. Biswas actedas reviewer for reputed national and international journals. Dr. Ajay Pratap Singh has received a B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree in 2007 from Kerala Agricultural University, Masters in Veterinary Science in 2009, and Ph.D. in 2015 both in Veterinary Bacteriology from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly, India. Since 2011, he works in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology, College of Veterinary Sciences and AH, U.P. Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwavidhyalay Evam Go-Anusandhan Sansthan, Mathura as Assistant Professor. His current research is focused on the epidemiological investigation of livestock-associated antimicrobial drug resistance, the molecular mechanism of transmission, and its mitigation strategies. He has completed 7 research projects as principal investigator and/or co-investigator. He has (co-)authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications in peer-reviewed journals and several invited papers in conferences and book chapters. In addition, he is also acting as reviewer in some leading journals like Frontiers in Immunology, Indian Journal of Animal Science and Indian Journal of Animal Research etc. He has delivered a talk and invited seminars at several workshops and national/international conferences. He is a Life member of various organizations such as the Indian Society for Association of Public health Veterinarians (APHV), the Indian Association of Veterinary Microbiologists, Immunologists, and Specialists in Infectious Diseases (IAVMI), Indian Society of Veterinary Immunology and Biotechnology. Dr. Maninder Singh is Associate Professor in Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, College of Veterinary Science, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Punjab, India. He has earlier served as Assistant Professor in SKUAST-Jammu (2010-2021). His research interest is focused on bacterial diseases especially zoonotic diseases and sero diagnosis of diseases. Hismajor research contributions are on brucellosis including its isolation and molecular characterization. He has served as referee for a number of International journals, including Frontiers of Veterinary Science, Journal of Veterinary Medicine and Science and Brazilian Journal of Microbiology. He has more than 12 years of teaching experience in Veterinary Public Health, Zoonoses, Food Safety and Veterinary Epidemiology. He has been the author of around 40 research articles and authored many book chapters. He is a member of national scientific societies and organizations namely Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists and Association of Public Health Veterinarians, India. Dr. Indranil Samanta is associated with teaching and research in Veterinary Microbiology, Zoonosis and One Health for last one decade in West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, Kolkata, India. After post-graduation from Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly,India, Dr. Samanta served as Assistant Professor in S.K. University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), India and Veterinary Officer, Government of West Bengal (India) before joining the current position. He has explored the status of Indian livestock, poultry or their products, captive birds and pet animals as a source of zoonotic pathogens such as STEC, EPEC, EHEC, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Cryptococcus and dermatophytes to make consumer awareness. He has authored four books entitled ‘Veterinary Bacteriology: Revised second edition’ (NIPA, India), ‘Veterinary Mycology’ (Springer), ‘Pet bird diseases and care’ (Springer-Nature), 'Antimicrobial Resistance in Agriculture' (Academic Press, Elsevier) and 150 research articles in peer reviewed journals associated with prevalence of zoonotic bacteria, antimicrobial resistance in livestock and their transmission dynamics. He is the recipient of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) Associate, American Society of Microbiology travel grant, Indian National Science Academy (INSA)-Summer Research Fellowship, Best Teacher Award (twice) at faculty and University level of WBUAFS, Elsevier certificate for outstanding contribution in reviewing, P. Madhusudan Gold Medal, Elected Membership of Royal Society of Biology (UK) and several best presentation awards in national conferences. He received grants for conducting research from Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Medical Research Council (UK), Department of Biotechnology (Government of India) and Department of Science & Technology and Biotechnology (Government of West Bengal). Dr. Samanta acts as Associate Editor, Academic Editor and Senior Editorial Board member of Frontiers in Veterinary Science, Plos One and BMC Veterinary Research, respectively and reviewer for several international and national journals.
