Luminescent materials show enormous potential in a wide range of applications, such as solid-state lighting, energy, display imaging, and optical thermometry. Developing novel metal oxide-based phosphors and exploring green technologies and methods for the preparation of high-performance phosphor materials is therefore vital for a number of industries. This book focuses on the basic principles, experimental techniques, and various applications of luminescent materials derived from metal oxides. The book is divided into three parts, with Part 1 presenting the fundamentals of luminescent materials and experimental methods, including different synthesis and characterization techniques. Part 2 provides strategies to enhance luminescence through various host matrices, constructing hybrid phosphors with polymeric materials, and doping with non-rare earth elements. Finally, Part 3 explores recent developments of metal oxide-based phosphors in various applications, including photovoltaics, solid-state lighting, anti-counterfeiting, radiation dosimeters, and chemical sensors.

Teboho P. Mokoena is a senior lecturer in the Department of Physics at the University of the Free State, Phuthaditjhaba, South Africa. His research focusses on luminescence in nanomaterials. Sefako J. Mofokeng is a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Physics at the University of South Africa, Roodepoort, South Africa. His research interests lie in luminescence and nanomaterials synthesis and characterization. David E. Motaung is a professor in the Department of Physics at the University of the Free State, South Africa. His current research interests include the design, synthesis, and characterization of semiconductor metal oxides, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), perovskite, and MXenes nanostructured materials, and their application in gas sensing devices for food quality and air quality monitoring. Hendrik C. Swart is a senior professor in the Department of Physics at the University of the Free State, South Africa. His research investigates the degradation of phosphors for field emission displays, as well as developing materials for nano solid-state lighting. He has been key in the development of processes to synthesize and deposit thin films of several types of semiconductor nanoparticles to enhance the color, luminescent intensity, and lifetime of such displays.
