This book provides a systematic overview of the current state of technologies and future prospects for harnessing light for sustainable energy and advanced sensing applications. It covers advancements in photonics and trends in photocatalysis, photovoltaics, photonic nanogenerators, quantum sensors, and integrated AI/ML in optical sensors.

Advanced Photonic Devices for Energy and Sensing Applications covers emerging trends in optics and photonics for sustainable energy and next-generation sensing. The book is divided into two different sections. The first section focuses on recent developments and opportunities for utilizing photonics for energy applications such as solar cells, photovoltaics, and photocatalysis. The later section is devoted to advanced topics on optical sensor technology including plasmonics-based sensors, waveflex sensors, quantum sensing technologies, and artificial intelligence applications for developing real-world sensors. Key topics include an examination and discussion of plasmon resonance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, photonic metamaterials, lossy mode resonance, and wave-flex based technologies to develop a variety of sensors for biosensing and explosive detection.

The book serves as both a reference and a source of inspiration for students, researchers, and industry professionals in electrical engineering, chemical engineering, and materials science and engineering who are interested in the transformative power of light for a variety of applications.

Anand M. Shrivastav is an Assistant Research Professor and DST-INSPIRE Faculty Fellow at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, India, working in the field of optical biosensing using SPR, LMR, and SERS. He received his Ph.D. from IIT Delhi in 2018 and has completed postdoctoral research at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Ben-Gurion University (Israel), and the Public University of Navarra (Spain). He has been awarded prestigious fellowships, including the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship and the PBC Postdoctoral Fellowship. Subhojyoti Sinha is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Nanotechnology at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, India. He received his Ph.D. from National Institute of Technology Durgapur in 2015 and did his postdoctoral research work at IIT Madras, India and Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, USA. His current research interest focuses on exploring the interplay between physics and chemistry at the interfaces of engineered nanomaterials and nanocomposites for next-generation electrical and electrochemical energy storage devices. Shailendra K. Saxena has been an Assistant Professor (Research Track) in the Department of Physics and Nanotechnology at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, India, since March 2023. He earned his Ph.D. from IIT Indore in 2016 and has held postdoctoral positions including fellowships at the University of Alberta, Canada, and the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. His research projects have attracted funding from prominent agencies such as the Anusandhan National Research Foundation and UGC-CSR India. In recognition of his research excellence, Dr. Saxena received the Senior Postdoctoral Award from the Weizmann Institute of Science in 2021. His research interest includes Raman spectroscopy, Fano resonances, molecular electronics, and understanding exciton-plasmon interactions.
