Regenerative medicine aims to cure chronic intractable diseases by replacing malfunctioning cells and tissues with healthy ones and enhancing their repair and regeneration. Over the past decade, there has been exponential reporting of new technologies that advanced translational and clinical research in this field. Regenerative medicine applications have thus evolved to include tissue engineering and bioprinting in addition to cell therapy and gene therapy. Importantly, new technologies in regenerative medicine are increasingly moving to replace organ and tissue transplantation with cellular therapies and the use of extracellular vesicles (EVs). The latter are characterized as important vectors and therapeutic targets in many diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and inflammation. The book chapters cover new technologies and advances in regenerative medicine to treat chronic diseases, including cancer, diabetes, musculoskeletal diseases, dental diseases, and others.

Dr. Nagwa El-Badri is the Founding Chair of the internationally accredited Biomedical Sciences Program, and the Founding Director of the Center of Excellence for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at Zewail City of Science and Technology. She trained as a Fellow and an Initial Investigator of the American Heart Association. She received research support from the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, STDF, the American Heart Association, the National Institutes of Health, and several other foundations. She contributed over 120 publications and books in the field of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine and was named by Scholar GPS at top scholar in the stem cell field.

Dr. Nagwa was the founder and Director of the Undergraduate and Graduate Program of Women s Health at USF, the graduate program in Aging and Neuroscience, and the Medicine and Gender Scholarly Concentration at the College of Medicine, USF. She is recipient of many awards including the Women Appreciation Award from the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology for 2020. She was selected for AAMC Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development and was awarded Exemplary Leader in Management Position for Global Women in Stem, Meera Kaul Foundation. She is an elected Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, and the African Academy of Science. served on several national and international committees including the Arab League Education and Cultural Organization Research Committee, the Higher Education Reform Experts Committee, and the Council for Education and Scientific Research Policies at the Academy of Scientific Research, and the National Council for Women.
