This book addresses environmental challenges related to pollutant transport in rivers and estuaries through computational and mathematical modeling, optimization techniques, and computational intelligence. The authors explore methods for estimating the influence of physical processes that govern the distribution and concentration of pollutants. Special emphasis is placed on identifying parameters that characterize pollutant dispersion, as well as the location, intensity, and temporal dynamics of pollutant discharges. Optimization techniques are also presented to estimate the origin and magnitude of pollutant releases, enabling the assessment of environmental liabilities resulting from industrial activities or accidents.

Jader Lugon Junior is a Full Professor at the Fluminense Federal Institute (IFFluminense), affiliated with the Vocational Doctoral Program in Modeling and Technology for the Environment Applied to Water Resources and the Master's Program in Environmental Engineering and the undergraduate program in Control and Automation Engineering. His research interests include computational modelling, environmental modeling, inverse problems, gas-liquid adsorption, and heat and mass transfer.

Wagner Rambaldi Telles is a Professor at the Northwest Fluminense Institute of Higher Education, Federal Fluminense University (INFES/UFF), and a faculty member in the Vocational Doctoral Program in Modeling and Technology for the Environment Applied to Water Resources and the Master's Program in Computational Modeling (PUVR/UFF). His research focuses on applied mathematics, numerical analysis, inverse problems, and optimization.

Pedro Paulo Gomes Watts Rodrigues is a retired Professor and Researcher in the Graduate Program in Computational Modeling at the Polytechnic Institute of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).

Antônio José da Silva Neto is a Full Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of the Rio de Janeiro State University (IPRJ/UERJ), and creator and head of the Heat and Mass Transfer (LEMA) and Mechanical Testing and Metrology (LEMec) laboratories. He is a member of the Brazilian National Academy of Engineering (ANE), and is a professor in the Graduate Program on Computational Modelling at IPRJ/UERJ, and in the Vocational Doctoral Program in Modelling and Technology for the Environment Applied to Water Resources (AmbHidro) at the Federal Fluminense Institute (IFF). His research main interests are in heat and mass transfer, scientific computing, computational/artificial intelligence, computational modelling, environmental modelling and inverse problems in mechanical and nuclear engineering.
