His landmark contributions — ranging from the Wu-Yang monopole and monopole harmonics, to the first prediction of rising total cross-sections in high-energy scattering and many precision calculations in theoretical high energy physics — reflect a career devoted to unifying the physical and mathematical worlds.Honored with numerous accolades — including the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics, the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences — Wu remained intellectually active until the very end, publishing his final paper at the age of 89.
